Yesterday drivers and warehouse workers from NFI Indsutries and XPO Logisitcs went on strike. They are protesting their classification as independent contractors. We can not be sure how many of the total 1380 employees went on strike however the protest comes after a failed attempt by the Teamsters to unionize the workers. The majority of the workers prefer the current system so they are disappointed that the Teamsters have chosen to organize a strike.
The strike might be a result of a recent vote to review a revocable permit for one of NFI’s warehouses in the port due to unfair labour practices. The belief is that by classifying drivers as independent contractors allows the companies to treat the drivers and workers unfairly.
